A family from Diepsloot has lost their little girl Angel who died while attempting to cross a river using boulders trying to get to school. Her little lifeless body was found days after she was swept away by the river [1]. 22 years after democracy, we cannot allow for this to happen. Together we can put pressure on the City of Joburg to make sure that they build a foot bridge for children of Diepsloot.

Dear Mayor Tau and the City of Joburg Municipality,

We call on you to build the footbridge over the stream where Angel Sibanda died in Diepsloot before your term as Mayor ends.

Please stand with Angel’s mother and hundreds of other amandla community members in calling on the City of Joburg Mayor, Parks Tau, to urgently build a foot bridge as a memorial to little Angel. Together we can ensure that no more of our children die unnecessarily under our watch.

This was an unnecessary tragedy – you have the power to provide a safe means of crossing the stream for the residents – please use your power wisely and do it.

Asking parents who are at work to keep their children from crossing a river is silly. Please build these bridges immediately.

The Local government has a duty to act in the interest of the children that include creating safe public space.
