A family from Diepsloot has lost their little girl Angel who died while attempting to cross a river using boulders trying to get to school. Her little lifeless body was found days after she was swept away by the river [1]. 22 years after democracy, we cannot allow for this to happen. Together we can put pressure on the City of Joburg to make sure that they build a foot bridge for children of Diepsloot.

Dear Mayor Tau and the City of Joburg Municipality,

We call on you to build the footbridge over the stream where Angel Sibanda died in Diepsloot before your term as Mayor ends.

Please stand with Angel’s mother and hundreds of other amandla community members in calling on the City of Joburg Mayor, Parks Tau, to urgently build a foot bridge as a memorial to little Angel. Together we can ensure that no more of our children die unnecessarily under our watch.

I actually could not believe what I was reading. Why on earth are children – or anyone for that matter – obliged to cross a river via precarious routes? It’s more than unacceptable – it’s criminal. Put Gauteng taxpayers money to good use – what it’s intended for – by building that footbridge and never, ever allowing a child, teenager or adult to die again.

A footbridge to the memory of this precious little Angel will at least bring small comfort to her parents who have to face something no parent should ever be called to endure – the loss of their child. Mr Mayor – what if it were your little one? please do the right thing.
