While water is being switched off in drought stricken communities, the Slide the City event will divert precious water for profit. As citizens, consumers and readers of the municipalities and sponsors behind the Slide the City event, we have the collective power stop this event during the water crisis.
Together, we can demand that the municipalities hosting Slide the City events in Joburg, Tshwane, Nelspruit, Port Elizabeth, Knysna, Ballito and Cape Town, as well as the event sponsors Nedbank, Drum magazine, Huisgenoot magazine and You magainze, recognised that such an event is a slap in the face for the 150,000 South Africans who are surviving on emergency food aid because their communities have been declared disaster zones.
While the organisers of Slide the City claim all water is recycled, the event still removes precious water out of our environment, while poor communities are forced to queue for hours for water that should be growing food, flushing toilets and keeping people alive.
