Government heard our demand of #DataMustFall, and now the Competition Commission has begun their inquiry into the cost of data. The Commission wants public submissions on how much Vodacom, MTN and others charge us. This is a huge opportunity to win this campaign, but we only have until the 1st of November to collect as many submissions as possible.

That's why we are looking for volunteers to help sign up as many people as possible. Volunteering is an important commitment and involves the following:

- Being available for at least 2 full days anytime between the 14th of October and the 1st of November 2017. You can volunteer to recruit people when ever you have free time.

- Living in Gauteng and being able to travel to our office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, to sign a volunteer agreement, receive training (30 minutes), and pick up a t-shirt, sign up sheets, clip board and flyers (we can reimburse your taxi fare if you have limited resources to travel to our offices). At present, amandla .mobi does not have the budget or logistical capacity to post t-shirts, sign up sheets and other resources to volunteers outside of Gauteng.

- Being confident talking to people in your community and encouraging them to sign their name, provide their email address / cell phone number and explain why they want the price of data to come down.

- You would be committed to speaking to as many people as possible, including knocking on people's doors, speaking to people on the street, in crowded spaces, and also finding other spaces where you can sign people up.

- Would be willing to team up with another volunteer, or find a friend or family member who can accompany you as you sign people up for the campaign. For safety reasons, and in terms of living out our values, amandla .mobi wants to ensure volunteer organisers are as safe as possible.

- Would be willing to enter in people's names and email addresses / cell numbers into a special volunteer app on a smart phone so that we can send people updates on the campaign.

- Would be willing to read up about the data must fall campaign so you can explain the issue to people, and answer any questions.

- Finally, all volunteers will need to return the sign up sheets and clip boards to the amandla .mobi offices in Braamfontein by the 30th of October 2017.

We recognise that some amandla .mobi members lack resources and would struggle with the travel costs of volunteering. In addition, some members might not be able to afford data in order to enter in people's details onto the volunteer organiser app. Unfortunately, amandla .mobi has a very limited budget, but for those who genuinely lack the resources, we can provide some money to cover transport costs and buy data in order for you to volunteer. However, a volunteer agreement must be signed.

For more information, or if you need assistance with anything, please do not hesitate to contact Thuli Ngubane who will be on stand-by to help via email at or via phone on 079 240 4255.

Can you volunteer?

The Competition Commission is investigating how network operators like MTN and Vodacom rip us off. If we want to ensure #DataMustFall, we need to go door-to-door in our communities, speak to people and get their submission. If you can commit to at least 2 days of volunteering between now and the 1st of November, we can provide you with training a t-shirt, sign up sheets, clip boards and flyers to mobilise your community.
